IBS & Menopause

Hi Everyone!

I spoke with Everyday Health recently about the fact that bloating, constipation, and stomach issues can all start or worsen in menopause. Why is that, and what can you do about it? Click the above link or the button below to learn more.

🔴 Also, a new non-medical book, Incorruptible, by my friend Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup, is out. I had the privilege of being a pre-reader for the book, providing the perspective of someone who knows very little about large corporate business in this country. I think this book offers hope and insight into how ethical, sustainable companies like Costco can become the norm in our country. While this may not be typical content for my page, some of you may find it interesting. I did.

New Research/Info

🔴Celiac Disease: A new study in Nature Communications found that some people with celiac disease cannot digest fiber normally because the gut bacteria that normally digest the fiber are not present in certain people with celiac disease.

Why this matters: Fiber is known to promote gut microbial diversity (a good thing). If some people with celiac disease are not improving, could this be one of the reasons? Forty percent of people with celiac disease have ongoing symptoms. Could this be playing a bigger role than we have been giving it credit for? If that is the case, can using different forms of fiber or probiotic supplementation help people with celiac disease improve more quickly?

🔴Histamine Intolerance: A recent paper discussed the need for evaluating the low histamine diet in IBD patients.

Why this matters: For the unknown number of people suffering from histamine intolerance, it would shine a spotlight on this misunderstood condition and answer questions. There are 10 million people with IBD worldwide, and many of them have histamine intolerance. If research on IBD helps us better understand histamine intolerance, think of all the people who don't have IBD that might also be helped.

🔴Peptide Therapy: A recent article on Health Central gives the risks, benefits, and unknowns of peptide therapy. Please read this before jumping on the bandwagon.

Have a great day! Dr. Burkhart
